Hey folks! I apologize for the lack of updates. Life did a thing. But now that I'm back, let's finish up the first game! Last time we acquired some magical beans, which really can only mean one thing...Heading East two screens, Graham finds himself in this lovely little place. ![]() look: Lovely wildflowers grow profusely in this beautiful green meadow. look flowers: What a pretty bed of wildflowers. Hmm... It's like the game wants me to notice the flowers. Well, I do believe a nice beanstalk would go well with them. plant beans: You plant the magical beans in the fertile soil. Suddenly, something incredible begins to happen! Current Score: 109 of 158 After a 30 second, extremely slow cutscene, a plant is born. ![]() look beanstalk: This mighty beanstalk stretches up so high, it vanishes into the clouds above. Well, let's climb this beast. In the original game, that is an extremely hard to task. You pretty much have to save after every step because you will fall and die a lot. No question about it. The remake is a little more forgiving since we have the mouse feature, but it is still a pain. climb beanstalk Graham automatically climbs to the next screen. ![]() look: The view of Daventry from up here is stunning. There are gentle rolling hills and valleys as far as the eye can see. Off in the distance, clouds float far above the lands. Apparently the game decides to give you a beautiful image of this wonderful land before you inevitably fall to your death. ![]() *sigh* Death Count: 6 In the first screen, I saved nine times. Once Graham finishes that, he finds himself here: ![]() Sierra must really want us to hate this game... look: The beanstalk disappears up into the clouds. Another eight saves later, and finally we reach the top. Note that we only got two points for that horrible climb... Oh Sierra. ![]() look: It is a mighty beanstalk which descends to the ground far below. I really expected something more from the description, but I guess when you're in the clouds all you'll see is clouds. Moving on, Graham goes East one screen, South one screen, and East another two screens. I ![]() Death Count: 7 ![]() look: You are in the Land of the Clouds. It is rumored that a giant lives up here. No matter what screen you are on (save for two), this is the message you'll get. However, there is something we need on this screen. Oh, Sierra, you wanted me to find things by myself even though you used to point them out to me? Thank you. look tree: There is a hole at the bottom of one of the trees. look hole: You see a slingshot in the hole. take slingshot: You reach into the hole and pull out the leather slingshot. Current Score: 113 of 158 Hmm... A giant and a slingshot, eh? Perhaps it's time to do some hunting, biblical style. One screen West and one screen North is where we find ![]() ...Wait. This is a Sierra game. While we get three points for slaying the giant, there is in fact a better way. Fact: Only witches deserve to die. Instead, we go to one screen South of the giant. wear ring: You place the shimmering ring upon your finger. (This is the magic ring we received from the elf near the beginning.) rub ring: As you rub the shimmering ring, you turn invisible! Now Graham stalks and waits. ![]() Graham is that fun little outline near the bottom. After a solid two minutes (I timed it) of the giant wandering around aimlessly, we get this message. The giant is getting tired of looking for you. Seems like he may be getting ready to take a nap. Good job! The huge giant, tuckered out from stomping around, has fallen asleep. Current Score: 120 of 158 look giant: The giant is asleep, with a chest lying next to him. That little chest he was carrying around is exactly what we are after. take chest: Slowly, carefully, you take the chest without waking the giant. Current Score: 128 of 158 Graham sneaks East one screen. ![]() look: You see the entrance to a cave within the mountaintop. Good, because I am not climbing down that horrible beanstalk. ![]() look: The suspended walkway seems to wind forever down into the very bowels of the mountain. This only seems slightly less dangerous... Again, save the game often, since it is easy to die in here, but there is also a dwarf dwelling in the mountain. He will permanently steal Graham's inventory. Falling just gives a silly message of WHOOPS!, but I most definitely did fall. Death Count: 8 When Graham is almost at the end, this message pops up: The spell to make you invisible has expired and you are once again visible to dangerous creatures but, the ring has now disappeared. (I copy these exactly as they are. Yes that comma is awkward.) ![]() *sigh* Suddenly, a small dwarf runs out of the shadows and approaches you. Graham cannot move after that message displays. The sneaky little dwarf caught you by surprise. Did he steal anything from you? Yes. My inventory and 8 of my hard earned points. After attempting it 27 times (truthfully), I did a very big oops and saved instead of restored.... Coming up next... After crying for an hour, we'll find our way through the mountain and to the last treasure in... King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown |
